I-wen Wang, M.D., Ph.D., is a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon at Baptist Health Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute, part of Baptist Health Heart & Vascular Care. His clinical focus includes mechanical circulatory support, perfusion and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) as well as adult heart transplantation and the surgical management of advanced heart failure. He has extensive experience using ventricular assist devices and temporary mechanical circulatory support systems to stabilize critically ill patients and support heart function in cases of cardiogenic shock and end-stage heart disease. Dr. Wang earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, followed by cardiothoracic surgery residency training at the University of Michigan Medical Center. He further completed a cardiothoracic transplant and ventricular assist device fellowship at Washington University Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. In addition to his medical training, Dr. Wang holds Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in macromolecular science and engineering from Case Western Reserve University, graduating with high honors. Board-certified in thoracic surgery, Dr. Wang has held academic and leadership appointments focused on heart transplantation, mechanical circulatory support and cardiovascular surgery quality improvement. He has served as a principal investigator in national and international clinical trials evaluating ventricular assist devices, donor heart preservation systems and extracorporeal life support technologies. His scholarly contributions include numerous peer-reviewed publications and invited lectures in the field of ECMO, perfusion science, advanced heart failure and transplant surgery. Dr. Wang works closely with cardiologists, heart failure specialists and multidisciplinary teams to achieve excellence in complex cardiovascular care driven by compassion, passion and innovation. He believes coordinated precision, evidence-based care and patient-centered focus are essential to providing compassionate service to the community. Outside of work, Dr. Wang enjoys culinary travels, cooking for family, performance engineering and focus-driven sports that keep him sharp. Dr. Wang speaks English and Mandarin Chinese.
